Breathiness differences in male and female speech. Is H1-H2 an appropriate measure?

چکیده

A wellestablished difference between male and female voices, at least in an AngloSaxon con text, is the greater degree of breathy voice used by women. The acoustic measure that has most commonly been used to validate this difference are the relative strengths of the first and second harmonics, H1H2. This paper suggests that sexspecific differences in harmonic spacing combined with the high likelihood of nasality being present in the vocalic portions make the use of H1H2 an unreliable measure in estab lishing sexspecific differences in breathiness.

The effects of linguistic experience on the perception of phonation

This study investigates the role linguistic experience has on the perception of phonation and acoustic properties that correlate with this perception. Listeners from Gujarati (contrasts breathy versus modal vowels), Spanish (no breathiness) and English (allophonic breathiness) participated in: (1) a similarityrating task, indicating the similarity of modal and/or breathy Mazatec vowels and (2) ...

Voice, speech and gender: male-female acoustic differences and cross-language variation in English and French speakers

Many studies were conducted on acoustic differences between female and male voices. However, they were generally led on speakers of only one language, and focused on a single acoustic parameter. The present study is an acoustic analysis of dissyllabic words or pseudo-words produced by Northeastern American English speakers and Parisian French speakers. Resonant frequencies, mean F0, F0 range, V...

Effects of short-term auditory deprivation on speech production in adult cochlear implant users.

Speech production parameters of three postlingually deafened adults who use cochlear implants were measured: after 24 h of auditory deprivation (which was achieved by turning the subject's speech processor off); after turning the speech processor back on; and after turning the speech processor off again. The measured parameters included vowel acoustics [F1, F2, F0, sound-pressure level (SPL), d...

The phonetics of contrastive phonation in Gujarati

The current study examines (near-)minimal pairs of breathy and modal phonation produced by ten native speakers of Gujarati in connected speech, across different vowel qualities and separated by nine equal timepoints of vowel duration. The results identify five spectral measures (i.e. H1–H2, H2–H4, H1–A1, H1–A2, H1–A3), four noise measures (i.e. cepstral peak prominence and three measures of har...

Relation of structural and vibratory kinematics of the vocal folds to two acoustic measures of breathy voice based on computational modeling.

PURPOSE To relate vocal fold structure and kinematics to 2 acoustic measures: cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and the amplitude of the first harmonic relative to the second (H1-H2). METHOD The authors used a computational, kinematic model of the medial surfaces of the vocal folds to specify features of vocal fold structure and vibration in a manner consistent with breathy voice. Four model par...
